Counselor | New York | Psychologist | Telehealth | USA
Dr. Whittaker is a New York State Licensed Psychologist. She started her career as an elementary school teacher. As a New York State Certified teacher, she felt she was not adequately meeting the needs of students, as they brought challenges to the classroom that could not be handled by a classroom teacher. As a result, she pursued studies in psychology, in an attempt to learn how to address the challenges that inhibit a child’s learning and development. She has worked with school-aged populations within a school setting, and also in a private practice setting. Within this capacity, she has provided testing, counseling, intervention planning and social skills training services. She works closely with parents, individually and in groups to develop intervention programs for children with behavioral difficulties. Dr. Whittaker is a member of the American Psychological Association (APA). Having the opportunity to work with adults and children within the family context created gradual shifts in her therapy interest. Thus, Although her passion started out with working with children and adolescents, Dr. Whittaker after spending some time providing mental health services for adults and couples have extended this passion. To this end, Dr. Whittaker engaged in courses of study to expand her knowledge of working with families, in particular, with couples. Being able to intervene and give hope to a marriage that seemingly is non-exist is one of her greatest joys.
